Calling all student writers! Weekly Reader's Student Publishing Contest honors the nation's best nonfiction writing by kids in grades 3 to 12. Individual pieces as well as print and online student publications are eligible.
Winners receive a free trip to Washington, D.C., plus other great prizes. Teachers of winning publications will win a Weekly Reader subscription for their classroom. Students win passes for a family visit to the Newseum, the interactive museum of news in Washington, D.C.
Contest launches October 18. Any student nonfiction work created during Jan. 1, 2011–Feb. 29, 2012 is eligible. Entries must be postmarked by March 16, 2012. Entries should be in one of the following categories:
Individual Writing
Any piece of student nonfiction writing between 500 and 2,500 words is eligible, including memoirs, essays, and stories about news events. Entries do not need to have been published and do not need to be affiliated with a school.
Student Publications
Student publications, including newspapers, magazines, and literary magazines that include nonfiction, are eligible.
Digital-Only Publications
Online-only student publications, including newspapers, magazines, and literary magazines that include nonfiction, are eligible.
